What Makes a Website “Fast” — and Why Speed Sells
Everyone says a website should be “fast,” but fast compared to what? You open your own site, it loads in a couple of seconds, and it feels fine — to you, on your wifi, on the page you visit every day. For a first-time visitor on mobile data, the experience can be very different. And that gap quietly costs you customers.
Website speed isn’t vanity. It directly affects how many visitors stick around, how many buy or enquire, and even where you rank on Google. Here’s what actually makes a site fast, and why it’s worth caring about.
What “Fast” Actually Means
Speed is really three things: how quickly the main content appears, how fast the page responds when you tap or click, and whether things stay put instead of jumping around as they load. Google bundles these into what it calls Core Web Vitals — its way of measuring whether a page feels quick and stable to a real person. A site can look finished and still fail on all three.
Why Speed Sells
The numbers are blunt. Google’s own research found conversions can drop by around 20% for every extra second a mobile page takes to load, and more than half of mobile visitors abandon a page that takes longer than three seconds. People don’t wait anymore — a slow site loses the sale before your offer is even on screen. No amount of clever copy wins back someone who has already left.
It Affects Your Google Ranking Too
Speed also feeds SEO. It’s not the single biggest factor — good, relevant content matters more — but Google uses those Core Web Vitals as a tie-breaker: when two sites are otherwise similar, the faster one tends to win the higher spot. So speed helps you get found and helps you convert once you’re found. It’s rare to get both from one improvement.
What Slows a Site Down
Usually it’s a few familiar culprits: huge unoptimised images, too many plugins or scripts loading at once, bloated page builders, and cheap, overloaded hosting. The good news is these are all fixable. Right-sized images, lean plugins, a clean build, decent hosting and a bit of caching (or a CDN) can transform a sluggish site — often dramatically.
Where ELF Digital Studio Comes In
We build sites to be fast from the ground up — properly compressed images, a lean setup without plugin bloat, and hosting that can keep up — and we can tune an existing slow site too. The goal is simple: a website that loads before your visitor loses patience.
