What Happens to a Domain After It Expires? The Full Timeline
Every so often a client messages us in a mild panic: “My website’s gone — it just says the domain expired. Did I lose it?” The good news is that a domain doesn’t vanish the second it expires. There’s a whole timeline you move through first, and knowing it can save you a lot of stress — and sometimes a lot of money.
A domain is basically your website’s address, rented year by year. When you forget to renew — or a card on file quietly fails — it doesn’t instantly go to someone else. Instead it works through a fixed set of stages. Here’s what actually happens, and when.
Stage 1: The Grace Period
The moment your domain expires, your website and email usually stop working — which is the scare that gets everyone’s attention. But you’re still the owner. For most domains like .com, there’s a grace period (often up to around 45 days, though your registrar may give less) where you can simply renew at the normal price and everything comes back as if nothing happened.
So if your site suddenly shows an “expired” page, don’t panic — check this first. Most of the time, a quick renewal within this window fixes the whole thing.
Stage 2: The Redemption Period
Miss the grace period and the domain drops into what’s called redemption — typically around 30 days for .com and similar domains. It’s still recoverable, but now it’s harder and pricier. You can’t just click renew; your registrar has to run a formal “restore,” and that usually comes with a hefty redemption fee on top of the renewal.
This is the stage where forgetting to renew starts to genuinely cost you. Recoverable, yes — but no longer cheap or quick.
Stage 3: Pending Delete, Then Gone
If you still don’t act, the domain enters “pending delete” for about five days. At this point it’s out of your hands entirely — it can’t be renewed or restored. After that, it’s released back to the public, and anyone in the world can register it, including competitors or resellers who watch for expiring names.
Once it’s gone, it’s gone. Getting it back can mean paying whoever grabbed it whatever they feel like asking — if they’re willing to sell at all.
