Is a Website Still Relevant in the Era of Generative AI?

More clients are asking us a version of this question lately: “If people just ask ChatGPT now, do I even need a website?”

It’s a fair question. Search behaviour genuinely has changed — a lot of people ask an AI assistant a question and get an answer without ever clicking through to a page. Some industry forecasts expect web traffic from search to keep shrinking as this becomes normal. But the conclusion people jump to — “websites are becoming irrelevant” — isn’t what the shift actually shows. What’s changing is the job a website does, not whether you need one.

AI Still Needs Somewhere to Get Its Answers From

Generative AI tools don’t invent information out of nowhere. When ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews, or Perplexity answer a question about your industry, they’re pulling from content that already exists somewhere on the web — and citing it, when they can.

That’s the core logic behind what’s now called Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO): if there’s no clear, well-structured page answering the question, the AI has nothing to recommend you with — so it recommends whoever does have that page. Businesses that publish clear, specific answers on their own website are increasingly the ones AI tools quote and link back to. Businesses with no website, or a thin one, simply aren’t part of the conversation.

In other words: the less visible your business is to AI, the less often AI recommends it. A website isn’t competing with AI search anymore — it’s the raw material AI search runs on.

What AI Still Can't Replace

Even when AI does send someone your way, a few things haven’t changed:

  • Ownership. Your social media pages, marketplace listings, and directory profiles all sit on infrastructure you don’t control — one policy change or algorithm shift and that presence can disappear overnight. Your website is the one digital asset that’s actually yours.
  • Trust signals. Privacy policies, security badges, real client work, clear pricing, contact details — this is where a visitor decides whether to trust a business, and AI-generated summaries can’t carry that weight on your behalf.
  • The actual conversion. People might discover you through an AI answer, but when they’re ready to enquire, book, or buy, they still land on a real page to do it. That moment hasn’t moved anywhere.

If anything, visitors who arrive after asking an AI a question tend to be further along already — they’ve done their research, and they’re checking you’re legitimate before they act. That’s a higher-intent visitor than a random search click ever was.

So — Still Relevant?

Yes. What’s outdated is treating a website as a static brochure that just needs to exist. What’s needed now is a website built to do two jobs at once: convince a human, and be legible enough for an AI to read, understand, and recommend.

That’s the direction we build in at ELF Digital Studio — websites that are clean and well-structured enough to be picked up correctly by both people and the AI tools now standing between them and you.

One Brand, One Identity. Whether someone finds you through Google, a friend’s recommendation, or a question they asked an AI first — the website they land on should look, read, and feel like the same business every time.
